Jean-Eric Vergne has won the ABB FIA Formula E Championship title in New York City becoming the all-electric series’ first ever double-champion.

The Frenchman recovered from a disastrous first day in the season finale double-header to finish seventh in the second race and secure the points he needed to defend his title as Envision Virgin Racing’s Robin Frijns took the chequered flag in front of BMW i Andretti Motorsport driver Alex Sims and Nissan e.dams’ Sebastien Buemi.

The result meant DS Techeetah took the Teams’ Championship to avoid a repeat of Season 4 where their 30-point lead was overturned by Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler in New York – the German giant having to settle for second place.

A dramatic Saturday race in Brooklyn had seen the Frenchman finish pointless and bring fellow title challengers Lucas Di Grassi, Mitch Evans and Buemi – who won on Saturday – all lift into contention for the title, thanks to inspired drives.

All three could have unthinkably snatched the title from Vergne’s grip if they won the E-Prix and he finished pointless, and nerves were on show as Vergne started the race in 12th after a less than perfect qualifying in which left behind all of his Championship rivals on the grid.

However, he was fortunate that Buemi – after raising the tension by making Super Pole – was unable to take the three points for pole-position needed to stay in the hunt for the title by just +0.095 as BMW I Andretti Motorsport’s Sims took pole.

After the difficulties of Saturday, where two collision bookending the race had ensured Vergne remained pointless, he looked keen to avoid a repeat as he drove a far less frantic race in the knowledge that only a race win from his rivals could really hurt him.

While Evans and Di Grassi both drove good races and were able to climb to sixth and seventh but crashed into each other in the final moments of the race as Vergne took the trophy, with Dutchman Frijns also celebrating his second race victory of the season for Sir Richard Branson’s Envision Virgin Racing – the only team in Formula E to claim race wins with both of their drivers.

Formula E will return in November 2019 with Season 6 of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. The 2019/2020 campaign is set to be the most anticipated season of Formula E’s history, with German manufacturers Mercedes-Benz and Porsche to join the series.
